The Money Thermostat: Why We Stay Stuck at One Number

Joel grew up watching his father celebrate a $90,000 year in the late 1980s, a number that quietly became his own ceiling once he started earning. Every time his income crossed it, he found ways to sabotage himself back down, a pattern he calls the money thermostat. He sees the same thing constantly in his coaching practice: clients whose income goals mirror whatever number they grew up believing was already a lot of money, with no real reason attached to the target beyond familiarity.

Undercharging Is a Self-Worth Problem, Not a Pricing Problem

Joel's clients are often gifted at what they do and still charge far less than the value they create. He walks through the story of an energy healer charging fifty dollars an hour who felt guilty charging more for a "God-given talent," and points out that his own stock-picking ability is also a gift he charges plenty for. After Citigroup was forced to spin off its hedge fund group, Joel set up his own firm, leased office space on Madison Avenue, and had two insurance companies orally commit tens of millions of dollars. Both backed out within weeks of each other, leaving him with a fully built firm and no capital. Rather than shutting it down, Joel and his analyst ran the fund as if the money were already there: taking calls with companies, building a live trading spreadsheet, and tracking imaginary gains and losses every day until a real commitment finally came through three months later.

Gratitude, Happy Habits, and Rewiring the Brain for Prosperity

Joel points to research on gratitude journaling and brain elasticity to explain why simple daily habits, like writing down three things you're grateful for or building in small moments of joy, can shift someone's financial outlook over time.
