Oscar Casanova closed more than $30 billion in deals at Goldman Sachs, high-growth startups, and Shopify before founding Eververdant Growth Partners, a fractional CFO advisory firm built for lower middle-market business owners. On this episode of Scrappy But Successful, Oscar sits down with host Jack Tompkins to talk about the journey from Mexico to Wall Street to building his own firm, and why the best CFO advice starts with genuine curiosity instead of a spreadsheet.
From Mexico to Goldman Sachs
Oscar grew up in Mexico and moved to the United States in 2011, eventually landing a spot at Goldman Sachs on his fifth application attempt. He credits the experience with teaching him how to think strategically about business at scale, working alongside a tight-knit Latin America team on transactions that shaped his understanding of what it takes to build lasting value.
Building an operating system for life
Long before he applied it to his business, Oscar built what he calls an operating system for his own life: the same four meals every day, a color-coded calendar, and a strict two hour deep work block first thing every morning. It sounds rigid, but Oscar frames it as the thing that removes decision fatigue so he can focus his energy on the parts of the business that actually need him.
Winning clients by surrendering the outcome
Rather than chasing a client count every month, Oscar built Eververdant around a simple question: how many people did I genuinely serve today? He calls this surrendering the outcome, a mindset shift he credits with turning client acquisition from a stressful numbers game into something that happens naturally through real conversations.
What makes a client coachable
Oscar walks through how his firm earns trust with a new client, starting with a 90 day onboarding built on curiosity rather than advice. He looks for business owners who are genuinely coachable and aligned with his values, because he has learned the hard way that a mismatch on either front eventually costs both sides.
